Someone with a working brain has to make this list because ESPN completely fucked it up. They weren’t even close. They literally didn’t even have the most dominant athlete of the last 20 years on their list. HOW? It is clear who number 1 on this list is if you’re going by the most dominant athlete. This doesn’t take some bullshit equation to generate the most dominant athletes of the last 20 years. ESPN shouldn’t throw the dominance word around if that isn’t what their list actually was.
1.) Michael Phelps (ESPN list – Not listed)
An American hero. 28 medals overall, 23 GOLD MEDALS. ESPN doesn’t have the balls to even add one of the greatest American athletes ever to their list because he smoked weed. The only explanation for him not even making the list is that the writer was so stoned when making the list that he just forgot. That is the only reasonable explanation.
2.) Tom Brady (ESPN list- 20)
The man, the myth, the legend. I don’t even like Tom Brady, but the fact that he was 20 on ESPN’s list is just wild. He’s the greatest ever quarterback to play the game and he wasn’t even their first quarterback on their list. Huh? 5 super bowl rings, 4 super bowl MVPs, 13x pro bowl, 3x MVP. I could list 100 more accomplishments but what’s the point. Tom Brady is a clear number 2.
3.) Floyd “Money” Mayweather (ESPN list- 8)
I am not a huge fan of this man. The fact that he was number 8 on their list is once again INSANE. The man is 50-0 and that’s all that needs to be said. If you want dominate I would say the man who has fought 50 times and never lost should probably make the top 5 AT LEAST.
4.) Tiger Woods (ESPN list- 1)
Any time you make the argument for the greatest of all time in something you have been very successful. Tiger Wood’s does just that. Tiger Wood’s was basically the most famous athlete of my childhood and he is a golfer. No other golfer will ever get the fame that Tiger did. He would also be number 1 on my list if it wasn’t for all of the terrible years. To be dominant, you always need to be dominant in a sport like golf. But watch out, TIGER IS BACK.
5.) Jimmie Johnson (ESPN list- 4)
People may highly disagree with this one and say that Nascar isn’t a sport. I understand your argument for that. All I can say here is respect greatness. He is tied for the most all-time in titles with 7. He won 5 consecutive titles, which is unbelievable. This is one of the lone athletes that ESPN and I had in the same ballpark. Just since 2004, he has 77 victories and that is nothing short of impressive.
6.) Usain Bolt (ESPN list- 10)
When it comes to track, in the Olympics, there has only been one man for the past 20 years that you want to see line-up. Usain Bolt is incredible. Fastest human to ever live and he set the record while doing a little showboating before he finished. THAT IS HOW INCREDIBLE HE IS. He never felt losing was an option. People waited for 4 years and then another 4 and then another 4, Usain Bolt didn’t disappoint. An easy option for number 6.
7.) Serena Williams (ESPN list- 12)
I am going, to be honest about this one…. Serena Williams has won enough tournaments to be number 1 on this list. The reason she is at 7 is that I don’t watch tennis and I am not going to start. The only thing I know about Serena Williams is I am certain she hasn’t lost in 20 years. (that’s not true) Whenever people start comparing her to the best guys on the planet saying they think she could beat them, then shes made it. I can’t even name another female tennis player minus her sister Venus and I only know her because of Serena. I knew Serena Williams was easily a top 10 on this list but I just didn’t know where and I felt 7 was a good spot.
8.) Roger Federer (ESPN list- 5)
Once again, I knew this man was deserving of being in the top 10. 5 seems a little high with the athletes we have had in the last 20 years. I know nothing about tennis, I barely understand the rules. One thing I do know is that Roger Federer is the greatest male tennis player of the last 20 years and I don’t even have to follow tennis to know that.
9.) Lionel Messi (ESPN list- 11)
Soccer another sport that I could care less about, if it ain’t the world cup I am not watching. From what I have seen Messi is literally just better than everyone else. Messi makes the players he’s playing against look like they aren’t in the same profession as him. Messi will barely even move and have no problem with keeping defenders feet off of the ball. In 13 years with Barcelona, he has set the goals and assists records. I only know a total of about 4 soccer teams and Barcelona is one of them so it only taking him 13 years to set the goals and assists record seems pretty incredible.
10.) Tim Duncan (ESPN list- Unlisted)
Timmy D. The most overlooked basketball player of all time. He is the greatest power forward of all time and people say that but he never had the respect he deserved when he played. 5x NBA Champion, 2x MVP, 15x All-Star, 10x NBA first team, 8x defensive first team. Do I need to keep going? The man is incredible and people really didn’t take it all in the past 20 years. Tim Duncan is easily the most dominant NBA player of the last 20 years.
11.) Christiano Ronaldo (ESPN list- 14)
After last nights goal that Ronaldo had pushes him up to number 11 on this list. Before that goal, he would have made this list regardless but after that goal, he is pushed up all the way to 11. Plus no homo, but you can’t leave a guy who looks like this off of this list because he would probably make this list just because of his dominance in getting chicks.
12.) Rafael Nadal (ESPN list- Unlisted)
I don’t know tennis but I can read stats. Rafael Nadal doesn’t lose very often. If you don’t lose you are clearly very dominant. He is ranked as the number 2 tennis player in the world. The number 1 ranked tennis player is in the top 10 in this list so 2 isn’t falling far behind.
13.) Kobe Bryant (ESPN list- Unlisted)
The obvious Kobe over LeBron? But Derrik, you can’t say anything bad about LeBron because that just isn’t allowed. ESPN has sucked LeBron’s dick since the day he entered the league. Will LeBron be the 2nd greatest player of all time when it’s all said and done? Yes. Does that mean he is the most dominant player? No. It does not mean that at all. I don’t base dominance on stats or James Harden would be in the top 5. Kobe was a winner. Kobe won 5 titles. 3rd all-time in scoring. Kobe 1x MVP, which he was snubbed on like 4 MVPs throughout his career. Kobe Bryant at 13 is correct. Kobe is a winner, he doesn’t have 5 finals loses coming out of the simple ass eastern conference.
14.) Peyton Manning (ESPN list- 3)
Peyton Manning has a special place in my heart and always will. Peyton Manning being 3 on most dominant athletes of the last 20 years is insane and if you believe that you should face prison time for such a dumb thought. You could easily make an argument for he deserves to be higher than 14. On my list, Peyton Manning is 14. He only won 2 super bowls and so have 10 other quarterbacks, some still in the league and they don’t even think about touching this list. They better not even breathe on it. Peyton Manning, I love you man. You’re still only 14.
15.) LeBron James (ESPN list- 2)
LeBron being at 2 is completely ridiculous for basing this of off dominance. Dominance to me has to include winning. You’ve already seen that part written because it backs my point on both people. Everything aside, LeBron is an amazing player and he dominants stats from game to game. The man is a bad leader always pointing fingers and killing all team chemistry. He doesn’t win as much as he loses. Hint his 3-5 finals record. With only one of those finals against the impressive Warriors. Other 2 series against the great Warriors LeBron’s teams haven’t competed.
16.) Breanna Stewart (ESPN list- Unlisted)
151-5. 4x NCAA Champion. 4x NCAA MOP. If you never lose in the college tournament then you have been one of the top 20 dominant athletes of the last 20 years. WNBA Rookie of the year. WNBA 2017 all-star. She will probably go down as the greatest women’s basketball player of all time. Nothing but respect for someone who refuses to lose when it counts.
17.) Marta (ESPN list- 9)
Most talented Women’s soccer player of all time. I don’t follow soccer and I am not going to start just to show ESPN I can make a better list. She is 1-2 in everyone’s greatest of all time women’s soccer players. That is all I can base this off of.
18.) Michael Schumacher (ESPN list- 7)
I don’t follow F1 racing just like every American. It’s bigger for foreigners than here. I am writing this from America which is why he is in 18th on my list. What I can’t take away from the man is he has won 7 championships and 5 in the last 20 years. I respect winning and he has 91 wins. The third most ever. Schumacher’s career is impressive nonetheless.
19.) Randy Moss (ESPN list- Unlisted)
Randy Moss is an eye test. There wasn’t anyone like Randy Moss in the last 20 years except Randy Moss. No matter how good you thought you were, you couldn’t guard Randy Moss. Randy Moss created defensive nightmares that other receivers could only dream of. The big name receivers in the NFL today don’t create the matchup problems that Randy Moss did every Sunday. All of that being said, he is 4th all-time in receiving and his career started 20 years ago making him the perfect person for this. Terrell Owens makes a good case to be above Randy Moss but because this falls in the last 20 years Randy Moss has to be the guy.
20.) Annika Sorenstam (ESPN list- 6)
Everything leaves me to believe that she deserves to be on this list. I am going to be the first to tell you, I have never watched a second of the LPGA. From all of my research, she is an incredible athlete. Even of all of the other sports on this list I have never really watched, I at least knew their names. I didn’t know who this was until I researched. If you’re anywhere in the top 10, I should know your name. I have watched sports since I understood sports. People may believe that she deserves to be higher but I just can’t.
This list took a lot longer than expected, but I feel as this list is a lot closer to the Top 20 dominant athletes of the last 20 years than ESPN’s was. I added 6 athletes without even question and they all are in deserving to be on the list. ESPN doesn’t understand dominance in sports. My list has the flow of popularity and winning and then stats. I have no idea what the equation they set was going to solve but whatever it did was a disaster. I don’t get paid to do this and I put more thought into this list than ESPN could have even dreamed.
